  • Moving is perhaps one of the most stressful things you can do. While the prospect of living in a new home is exciting, the thought of getting everything out of your current home is anything but. The moving process is made all the more difficult if you have animals. Not only do you need to make sure everything for them is squared away, but getting them acquainted to their new space can also be challenging. So, we’ve outlined some tips on how to move around your life without risking your pets sanity.

    1.) Choose the Right Location

If you’re a pet owner, you know you need to consider the needs of your animals too. After all, they are making the move just like you are, just with fewer overall responsibilities. When scoping out places to live, be sure that the location also suits your pet. Meaning, is there enough space in the home for them to be consistently comfortable? What about outdoor space for them to explore? Is there enough vertical space for your cat? These are all things that should be going through your head when choosing a new home. Like with any home, no option will be absolutely perfect. But, choose the best option for you and your pet’s needs.

    2.) Packing Your Home

Most cats, and some skittish dogs, are not huge fans of change. To help them get acquainted with the moving process, bring moving boxes into the living space before the move. This way they get used to seeing them around and don’t consider them sinister objects. When moving day comes along, keep your pet in a separate, quiet room, or ask a friend to watch them for the day. Also, it is important to keep your pet’s routine as normal as possible throughout the moving process.

3.) Getting Used to the New Space

Upon arriving at your new residence, allow your pet to get used to the space. It can be awfully tempting to let them run free in your new house, but that likely isn’t the smartest idea if they have been weird throughout the move. Allowing them to adjust to one of the main rooms they’ll be in is a great first step, and can keep them from feeling overwhelmed. Be sure to include their favorite toys and treats to show them it is a safe space. Once they appear comfortable, feel free to slowly introduce them to other rooms in the house. With a certain amount of patience, your pet will be king of the hill in no time.

These are just a few of the tips you should keep in mind when moving with an animal. While you can’t exactly listen to their opinion of your new home, you can decide how they acclimate to it. Keeping your pets happy is one of the main responsibilities of being a pet owner. Do good by your pet, and make the move as smooth as possible for them.
