If you’ve had the luxury of living in New England for a majority of your life, you know just how bad winters can get here. It’s always a toss-up. Sometimes the season lulls you into a sense of complacency with only cold weather, and then two days later there is almost two feet of snow on top of everything. The winter months certainly keep us guessing, and since they seem to take up most of the year, a lot of people move in the winter time. We’re here to give you some tips on how to make it through the process.
1.) Be Flexible
Since the weather has a mind of its own, especially in the winter, be prepared for some changes to your moving timeline. The day could begin with a clear sky and bright sun, and end with snow and hail plummeting from the sky. Needless to say, moving your belongings in the middle of a storm is likely not on your agenda. Be sure to keep an eye on the forecast in the weeks leading up to your big move, and, if need be, contact your movers to reschedule the moving day. It shouldn’t be too much of a problem given the season, and they just might thank you for sparing them a snowy move!
2.) Protect Your Things
New England winters are cold, so remember to insulate items appropriately. Breakable items, like dishes, are quite susceptible to fluctuations in temperature, and can easily break or crack if exposed to frigid air after being cooped up in your home. Electronics are also easily impacted by cold weather. Wrap breakable items in something thick and cushioned, like a blanket, to help lessen the shock of cold air. You can also choose to put breakable items in your own car for moving, as opposed to the moving truck, to make sure no harm comes to them. Regardless of what way you choose to transport delicate items, load them last and unload them first. This way, they will have as little exposure to the cold as possible.
3.) Plan for Extra Travel Time
Navigating the streets during inclement weather can be a hassle, so give yourself a decent amount of extra time to reach your destination. Keep in contact with your movers if you plan on meeting them at your new residence, since this will keep them up to date on any scheduling changes due to slow travel times.
4.) Show Your Movers Some Appreciation
Moving in the winter is not easy, so thank your movers for their hard work by providing them with steaming mugs of hot cocoa or coffee. This will give them something warm and invigorating to sip on while they take a break from the frigid weather. Small gestures like this can go a long way in keeping your move running smoothly, in addition to making the day a bit better for all of the movers.
No one said moving in the winter was easy, but we all don’t have the luxury of moving in the summer months.
