How to Pack and Move Your Mattress

  • #Packing Tips
  • Boxes? Check! Clothes? Check! Giant 100 lb rectangle upstairs?… Mattresses are heavy, awkward, and about as wide as a room. Still, they are a valuable investment, that aren’t cheap, and something you definitely would like transport without damaging.Lucky for you, the reader, we have the guide to help you perform this move without ruining your mattress in the process.

    Choosing a Transportation Method

This starts with choosing the right vehicle to use, and this is where moving companies can come in handy. Please do not strap a mattress to the top of your car or have it poking out the trunk if you’re thinking of using a sedan or compact car. This is not only dangerous to you but also the drivers on the road. Pickup trucks are a great option as most mattress will fit in the bed without any issue or sticking out of the end. Again, we highly recommend a moving company so that you don’t put yourself and others on the road in danger.

    Proper Mattress Moving Materials

When you’ve figured out your transport, it’s time to find the tools to help you transport the mattress safely. In fact, most of these are tools you should have for any DIY move without professional assistance.

    1. Thick plastic mattress bag, to assure it stays clean (make sure it’s the right size)

    2. Rope to properly securing your mattress if you’re putting it on the roof of your vehicle

    3. Scissors

    4. Duct tape

    5. Extra set of hands. A trusted friend with patience is always a plus

    Securing Your Mattress

Once you have the proper rope and your mattress is safely covered in plastic, it’s time to secure it to the car. Position the mattress on the roof, and make sure it’s centered.

Throw the first piece of rope over the length of your mattress. There should be enough rope left to tie securely under the front and back of your car. Make sure the rope is taut and the knots are secure.

Next you want to open all your windows except the driver’s window. Toss the second piece of rope across the width of the mattress. Then loop it back through the open windows twice before tying the rope ends together inside the car.

It’s important that you leave the driver’s door free as you won’t be able to open any of the other doors when the rope is tied. You want a way to get into and out of your car in case of an emergency or when you reach your destination.
