How to Make a Move Easier on Your Kids

If you thought moving with a significant other was hard, try doing it with children. Whether it be one, or four, of them, it’s certainly no easy task. With young children, it’s hard to get them excited for a move. This is especially true if they have lived in the same place for their entire lives. All they know is the town or city they grew up in, and while you as the parent might look at the move as a major positive, your children likely despise the entire process. You might not be able to get them one hundred percent on board with the move, but there are some things you can do to help them get over their moving blues.
1.) House Hunt Together
This is only a suggestion if it’s practical. Taking your kids to look at their potential new home can make things a lot more exciting for them. It gives them a chance to check out their potential new digs, and gives them a preliminary introduction to the neighborhood. If the option of bringing them isn’t on the table, or it would simply be too hectic, then include them when you house hunt online. This way they can at least see the house, and provide their opinion on how they feel about it. This can be a great first step in getting them amped up for a move.
2.) Visit Their Favorite Spots
Bringing your kids to their favorite neighborhood spots before moving away can be a great way for them to have closure with their current living space. These places can range from their favorite hiking trail to their most beloved ice cream shop. Odds are, your new neighborhood will be missing a few vital landmarks your kids grew up around. So, giving them a chance to visit those places one last time is a touching way for them to say good-bye, and accept that it might be the last time they ever see those special places.
3.) Have One Last Family Night in Your Home
As they say, home is where the heart is. Gather your family unit for one last night together in your home before you move away. As you’re all eating dinner, have your kids recall some of their favorite memories while living there. Laughing about the good times can help make it easier to say good-bye to the house before the big move.
