6 Mistakes People Make When They Move

  • A move is exciting! There is a journey ahead of you that is full of adventures and decisions. Whether you are moving across the country or simply down the street, you should be aware of these common moving mistakes, and create a plan to deal with such issues to keep you stress free!

    1. You may feel like renting out your old home, but you need to be smart about it. It is a good idea to hold onto the property, just in case things don’t work out the way you planned on the move. Also – collecting rent is a great supplement to your income. However, you need to be wise about renting out your home. Many people don’t factor in becoming a landlord and what this entails, and what other costs are associated with renting out a home. You need to account for maintenance issues, and will need to plan to pay your mortgage in between tenants as well.

    2. On the flip side of the coin, selling your home prematurely can land you in hot water. If you live in an area where the market is “hot” such as LA, NYC or SF, it may be tough to buy back into the market in a few years if you ever want to move back home. Some rental payments can be higher than a mortgage payment in these areas. Rent out your home before you sell, aside from holding onto your spot in the housing market, your home will net you more cash a few years from your actual move date.

    3. Not finalizing your new mortgage before you move and accept a job offer. While a job offer can be useful towards your mortgage loans, you should finalize all of these parts before you move, so that when you get there everything else will be taken care of.

    4. Don’t bring stuff with you that you don’t need right away. Moving is already overwhelming and chances are if you’re moving an entire household, there’s going to be a lot of stuff. Instead, opt for storage space with a local moving company such as Mastodon Moving LLC; a storage facility will allow you to unpack the necessary items first without all the clutter, then you can return for the additional possessions.

    5. Don’t forget to do your research about the area. Look into schools if you have children! Try and get information about where you will be living, so you know what to expect.

    6. Don’t be afraid of change. You shouldn’t try and mirror your new home to your old one; this could hold you back in your new space. Embrace the change of the move; look into new cultures, and new designs.
