The winter can be beautiful but it can also be pretty brutal, especially in New England. 2018 in Boston has started off with some seriously cold temperatures and if you’re moving relatively soon, it’s going to be a frigid experience for sure. But, you have to move when you have to move and if it happens in the winter then so be it. It’s not all bad either because there are some perks to moving in the winter. You see, most people move in the summer which means winter is offseason, so you can expect a more flexible moving schedule, more attention, and potentially lower rates as well. There are some things you should know about moving in the winter, however, so check out our pointers below.
1.) Keep Walkways Free of Ice and Snow
Ensuring you’re not going to slip and fall while carrying out boxes of your possessions should be high on your list on priorities. The last thing you’re going to want is your items crashing to the ground because you couldn’t shovel and salt your walkways prior to the big move. Even if you live in an apartment building and it’s not your responsibility to shovel and salt, it’s not a bad idea to check out the walkway you’ll be utilizing for your move prior to shuffling boxes around.
2.) Protect Your Old House and New House
Unless you’re experiencing a thoroughly dry winter, you’ll likely be tracking snow, salt, ice, or water through your old house while moving out, and into your new house while moving in. If you have any leftover cardboard boxes from packing, you can break them down and lay them on the floor to protect them from becoming a soaked mess. It’ll also give you, your family, and your movers some traction while walking in and out of the house.
3.) Protect Your Valued Goods
Weather can be unpredictable in the winter, so pack your goods with care to protect them from the elements. Even if the weather starts off dry, you could end up doused by the time you get everything out of your house. It’s not all about moisture, either. Extremely cold temperatures can inflict more damage than you think, such as cracking your plates if the air is particularly arctic. You definitely don’t want to show up at your new house with nothing to eat on, so please pack accordingly.
The thought of moving from one place to another in the winter can be an unpleasant one but it’s not all bad, there are upsides too. Things, like getting a lower moving rate and having a more open moving schedule, can help make up for the cold weather.
